Assistance Animals Are Not Pets: Reasonable Accommodations Related to Support Animals

Wednesday, July 17, 2024, 11AM PST

This forum will further pivotal discussions from a previous NFHTA forum, Assistance Animals Are Not Pets: Reasonable Accommodations Related to Support Animals. This will also offer the opportunity to learn more about disability in housing, the role of an assistance animal, and the importance of providing reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities.

In this forum, participants will:

  1. Identify the laws and key fair housing cases surrounding reasonable accommodations and assistance animals.
  2. Establish a firm applicable understanding of assistance and service animals, including both the shared and unique protections provided to each.
  3. Recognize how and when housing providers, municipalities, and other housing-transaction related parties are obligated to comply with reasonable accommodations for assistance animals, including service and support animals.
  4. Identify best practices for navigating assistance animal complaints and investigations.

Gain access to valuable resources that educate advocates and people with disabilities on their rights related to reasonable accommodations and assistance animals, and what options they have for making and enforcing their requests.
