A March 12 letter signed by California U.S. Senators Adam Schiff and Adam Padilla, among others, called on U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Scott Turner to distribute $3.6 billion in congressionally appropriated funding to Continuums of Care (CoCs) across the country. The letter was endorsed by the National Association to End Homelessness (NAEH). On Tuesday, March 18, the Sacramento CoC received the HUD award letter and will soon begin working with the HUD Field Office to submit all required documents to execute contracts within the coming months.
On March 15, a stopgap funding bill, or continuing resolution, was signed into law, extending funding for the federal government through September. NAEH has provided a fact sheet on the impacts of the resolution for HUD Homeless Assistance Grants and other key HUD programs.
In a March 18 post on the NAEH website, CEO Ann Oliva summarized actions affecting housing and homelessness in the first 60 days of the Trump administration. Her review addressed cuts and delays to Continuum of Care (CoC) program funding, termination of HUD Technical Assistance contracts, and the dismantling of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), all which impact funding, planning, and capacity to resolve homelessness. Oliva notes that proposed HUD workforce reductions could slow down critical support services for community grantees, further straining organizations working to address homelessness.
