For more than 25 years, Roberts Family Development Center (RFDC) has been a trusted presence in North Sacramento. What began as an after-school program has grown into a vital resource hub that supports the entire family.
RFDC offers academic and enrichment services throughout the school year, serving families in the Twin Rivers and Robla School Districts. During the summer, they expand their reach through the Freedom School Program, which serves additional districts including Natomas, Folsom, and West Sacramento. Beyond education, RFDC connects families to counseling and behavioral health resources in partnership with Sierra Health Foundation and Sacramento County Behavioral Health.
They also play an important role in the Black Child Legacy Campaign, supporting families involved with agencies such as Child Protective Services, Juvenile Probation, WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment), and SETA (Sacramento Employment and Training Agency).
Meeting Families Where They Are
In the past year, RFDC has achieved key milestones. Three staff members became certified in the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), which strengthens our community’s ability to support families in crisis. They have helped caregivers cover utility bills, assisted renters with urgent housing needs, and connected clients to critical services when it mattered most.
These services help fill real needs for real people in our community: A grandmother undergoing dialysis while caring for her grandchildren was struggling with an unpaid SMUD bill. Thanks to RFDC, her utilities stayed on. Another family received full rent and utility support during the holidays through the organization’s Concrete Needs program. These are just a few examples of the center’s impact.
Built on Partnership
RFDC believes that strong partnerships create strong communities. Their work is grounded in collaboration with local agencies and systems of care. By sharing knowledge and resources, they help create a more connected and resilient support network.
Their long-standing relationships with partner organizations are a point of pride. So is the fact that they own the building where they operate. That physical presence in the neighborhood matters. It offers families a consistent, welcoming place where they know they will be seen and supported.
