Federal Freeze Blocked Until Further Review

On Monday, February 5, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s freeze on trillions of dollars in federal grants and loans, reinforcing an earlier ruling from a Rhode Island court. Judge Loren L. AliKhan found that the spending freeze, issued by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on January 28, likely exceeded executive authority and posed immediate harm to federally funded organizations.

The ruling follows legal challenges from nonprofits and other entities that rely on federal grants. Plaintiffs argued that the freeze disrupted operations and unlawfully interfered with Congress’s authority over federal spending.

The case remains ongoing as courts assess the administration’s authority over federal financial assistance.
