Connect, Engage, and Transform within Sacramento’s Homelessness Response System

Sacramento Steps Forward currently provides capacity building support to community partners engaged in direct homeless assistance. These partners are actively seeking individual or group volunteers to assist with organizational needs and special projects.

Get Involved

Your in-kind donations are equally valuable as any monetary gift in support of creating an equitable community where everyone has a safe place to call home. If you have reservations about working directly with people experiencing homelessness, there are many additional volunteer needs.

Stepping In: Volunteers Impacting Our Community

Together, let’s celebrate service by highlighting individuals leaving their positive influence in Sacramento through community service. In this new blog series, we discuss impactful contributors within these different volunteer spaces, volunteer engagement best practices, and how the rest of our community can “step in” alongside them. Please contact Sarah Schwartz, SSF Volunteer Coordinator, at sschwartz@sacstepsforward.org if you’re interested in collaborating with us on a future blog post or would like to nominate someone for a volunteer profile. Point-In-Time Count

This biennial event is a communitywide effort to count how many people are living in places not meant for human habitation in any given night. Hundreds of volunteers are deployed in teams to count in pre-identified areas to count unsheltered individuals. Volunteers are also needed to assist with event set up, registration, clean up, and more.

2024 PIT Count

Disaster Preparedness

In the face of emergencies, SSF has actively contributed to disaster preparedness by distributing over 200 kits to unsheltered individuals from 2023 to 2024. These efforts, supported by a network of volunteers and professionals, underline SSF’s commitment to equipping vulnerable communities with essential resources for crisis resilience.

COVID-19 Response

During the COVID-19 pandemic, SSF mobilized an extensive volunteer network to promote vaccination among the homeless, successfully administering 4,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses between 2021 and 2023. This initiative reflects SSF’s dedication to public health and its role in safeguarding marginalized populations against the pandemic.

“I wanted to contribute to gathering data regarding the current homeless population to assist organizations that are addressing the problem of homelessness.”
“I applied to assist our community in striving for a complete, accurate, real-time count to work to prevent and end homelessness. We may not have total accuracy, but we sought to locate as many as possible, like a HOMELESS CENSUS COUNT. We know many people are suffering, and our work cannot stop until we make every effort to provide people with a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home.”
“I work with [Homeless Assistance Resource Team] in Citrus Heights at the intake center and wanted to do more.”
“I wanted to connect with my unhoused neighbors, help local leaders better understand their needs, and convey care to those struggling.”
“It’s important to gather this information to ensure those on the street get the adequate attention they need holding electeds accountable.”
“Personally, [I try] to find ways to give back to the community either through volunteering or donating so [the PIT] was an opportunity to give back.”
“I want to gain a better understanding on the experiences of unhoused individuals and find ways to help tend to their needs.”
