Open Beds for Sacramento's Winter Shelter 2011-2012

The Winter Shelter Program for 2011-2012 will include four components: 1. Winter Sanctuary; 2. Motel Voucher Program; 3. Families with children Overflow Shelters:

Winter Sanctuary:

Opens on Thursday, December 1. This is a nightly, rotating shelter, the staging area is TBA; look for an announcement later in this month. Guests will be provided a sleeping bag and will be sleeping on the floor. This program is for homeless adults.

Motel Voucher Program:

Will provide 50 beds beginning November 21, 2011 for shelter-referred clients meeting priorities: elderly (60+ years), families with children who cannot get into a shelter, referral from shelter of persons w/contagious illness or medical disabilities, shelter overflow. Emergency shelters should fax referral to Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center’s “Motel Voucher Program” at 916-455-7143

Families with Children Overflow Shelters:

Any facility the primary purpose of which is to provide temporary or transitional shelter for the homeless in general or for specific populations of the homeless. (HUD Definition) Staying in an emergency shelter is often the best way to access the entry point into transitional housing and other housing programs.

Wind Youth Center

Wind Youth Services works with youth experiencing homelessness, helping them find safety from the streets and giving them access to resources to help them move from crisis to healthy functioning and independent lives.

Wind Youth Center is open for youth, ages 11 to 22.
Wind Youth also operates a 12-bed, co-ed Youth Shelter called Wind House, for 11 to 17 year olds. To gain entry to the Shelter, you must meet with a Youth Advocate at the Wind Center.

Transitional Housing: Homeless Youth & Former Foster Youth

For the Youth programs below, call Lutheran Social Services at 916-453-2900 and specify the program. **There are long waiting lists for all of these programs.

Tubman House, Address: PO Box 160085, Sacramento, CA 95816 Site locations are confidential to protect the many residents escaping violence. Phone: 916-372-6272 Services: 18 months of housing and intensive support for young parents experiencing homelessness and their children. Services include: connection to permanent housing systems, counseling, leadership development, free on-site child development program, individual life planning and coaching, tutoring for GED/diploma/college, connection to college, parenting support, wellness activities, and support in rectifying court and debt issues. Target Population: Pregnant and/or parenting youth between 18 and 21 that are experiencing homelessness, and their children. Tubman uses a definition of homelessness that includes couch bouncing and those leaving a violent environment. Accessing Services: Client can call us directly at 916-372-6272. Lutheran Social Services Youth Programs

• “THPY (Transitional Housing Project for Youth) Program”: up to 2 years of transitional housing for homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24. To qualify for the program all youth must be legally emancipated, have or be working towards a GED/high school equivalency, and have an income/employment within 60 days.
• “Youth Moving On” Program: THP plus state sponsored program that provides up to two years of transitional housing for homeless youth between the ages of 18 and 24. To qualify for the program all youth must be legally emancipated, have or be working towards a GED/high school equivalency, and have an income/employment within 60 days.
• “Connections” Program: Connections provides up to two years of transitional housing for homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 24. To qualify for the program all youth must be legally emancipated, have or be working towards a GED/high school equivalency, and have an income/employment within 60 days.

Former Foster Youth Transitional Housing Program—VOA

A transitional housing program for former foster youth, it is a two-year transitional living program (24 months maximum) for young adults 18 to 23 who have aged out of the foster-care system.

Services provided include: living skills training; housing, employment and educational services; mentoring; and counseling in a semi-independent environment.

Transitional Housing: Single Adults and Families with Children

Project that has as its purpose facilitating the movement of homelessness individuals and families to permanent housing within a reasonable amount of time (usually 24 months). (HUD Definition) *These transitional programs have long waiting lists.
